The Regional Institute of English, formerly called
the Punjab Institute of English, was established in 1963 under a GOI
scheme for qualitative improvement in the teaching of English at the
secondary level. Today it caters to the ELT (English Language Teaching)
needs of the northern region, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and
Kashmir and Chandigarh. It is lodged in a spacious campus in sector 32 C,
Chandigarh. The Institute has a highly qualified faculty consisting of 1
Director with 7 posts of lecturers out of which 5 are filled by permanent
lecturers and 2 by contractual lecturers. The library is managed by a
qualified librarian and a library assistant. The office is headed by 1
superintendent assisted by a team of 4 persons. The Institute also has 1
technical assistant who looks after the functioning of the multimedia
language lab and the studio. It has 1 driver and 11 class IV employees on
a regular basis while 3 others have been engaged on contract basis.

The Institute meets the objective of teacher training through a variety of
courses and workshops. It runs two 3-month PGCTE (Post Graduate
Certificate in the Teaching of English) programmes for school teachers
besides refresher courses for college lecturers, training programmes for
primary teachers and orientation programmes for learners from all areas.

The Institute has a specialized Library
equipped with about 20,000 volumes, a Multimedia Language Lab equipped
with 21 computers and a variety of software on language learning and also
a Media Centre with a collection of language materials. It has a
state of the art studio. The Institute has a 26-seat hostel for
outstation teacher trainees.
In the coming months the RIE will be offering courses in communication
skills through CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) in addition to
its existing programmes. It will also be bringing out manuals for
different programmes. The RIE publishes an ELT journal FELT which is a
